32 years after their birth in Halifax, United Kingdom, Paradise Lost released their sixteenth album, "Obsidian", and show that they are still very strong and relevant.
The journey started in “Lost Paradise” (1990), but it
was in “Gothic” , from 1991, that the band took the heritage of Celtic Frost
and laid the foundations for a new style, Gothic Metal .
This locomotive starts in Doom / Death Metal and
carries two other important bands of the 90’s, Anathema and My Dying Bride ,
the famous Peaceville Three , because the three bands were part of this
recognized publisher.
The path had several direction changes. The Doom of
the first two albums materializes in "Shades Of God" with the hymn
"As I Die" , but has the first major turning point in "Draconian
Times" , 1995, probably the band's most successful album.
I hop on the train with "Symbol of life"
FROM 2002, but quickly fell in love with the band's past. The song “Gothic” was
essential in this discovery, but the 1997 album “One Second” was love at first
sight. Interestingly, it is one of most disliked records by the traditional
fans. Songs like “Say Just Words” or the title theme “One Second” were
milestones in my growth, with a Depeche Mode orientation that always fascinated
me.
The tenth album, homonymous by the way, is another one
of my favorites, although it seems to me that it went a little bit unnoticed
but it is a classic from beginning to end.
In between there is "Host" from 1999 and
"Believe in Nothing" from 2001, a pearl that Greg Mackintosh
(guitarist of the band) says doesn't really exist for him , thanks to EMI'S
impositions, their house at the time.
It is then that this black convoy returns to its
heaviest path with “In Requiem” , “Faith Divides Us- Death Unites Us”, this era's most outstanding album, “Tragic
Idol” , “The Plague Within” and 2017'S “Medusa ”, perhaps the heaviest of them all.
Another thing that most fascinated me in this band was
their lineup's consistency, with the hard core being composed of Nick Holmes on
voice and Greg Mackintosh on guitar, and the faithful squires Aaron Aedy on secondary guitar and Steve Edmondson on bass.
The 4 founding members have seen several names pass by
the drum kit, of which I highlight Jeff Singer, Adrian Erlandsson and
the current drummer, Walther Vayrynen, who is in my view, the most complete
of them all.
The last stop is “Obsidian”, a real Paradise Lost
record . It is the best Gothic Metal album written in the last 10/15 years.
Listen to the track “Ghosts” and hear what I'm talking about.
The Paradise Lost trip doesn't seem to have an end in
sight, and we appreciate that.
